Planting holly

As part of an exercise to improve a field boundary we have been planting holly in the bottom of an established hedge to help to gap it up. If successful it should give the field a greater degree of year round protection.
The holly was supplied to us in small pots. They are dug in and backfilled then protected with the plastic nets shown in the photo. The nets are held in place using a couple of canes. The bottom part of the nets is solid so that weeds can be sprayed of without damaging the plants.
Whilst holly can survive in a degree of shade it will be interesting to see how well they do when there is so much blackthorn around them. Although it was cold and there were snow showers the ground was soft enough and they went in well.
On the left side of the photo you can see a plough line. This will be removed in the spring to complete the re-establishment of the boundary.
